Stop browser resizing in Firefox

Now and then I’ll still run across a website that insists on resizing my browser for me.  Well, no thanks Mr. Self-Proclaimed-Web-so-called-master.  Well I came across this great tip for Firefox users on how to disable browser resizing.

  1. In the address bar, type: about:config
[you may wish to do this in a seperate tab]

  2. Scroll down to the attribute labeled: dom.disable_window_move_resize and simply double-click on that attribute to switch it to “TRUE”.  I believe the default attribute is false.  You may also right-click on the item and select “Toggle”.  It will appear bold when you have user-specific settings that differ from the default settings
  3. Restart Firefox and you’ll be in control of your browser’s dimensions and size.

Aardvark Firefox extension

Being a web developer and designer, I’m always looking for things to help make my job a little bit more efficient — sometimes tools to just make ugly websites not be so ugly (like those lyric websites with the extremely annoying ads and such).

Well, I’ve found a great Firefox extension that not only is useful for disecting and figuring out page layouts, it can also “erase” certain sections with the pressing of a button.  You’ve gotta check out the Aardvark Firefox Extension.

You’ll love it.

The art of retouching photos

It’s no real secret that retouching photos is a common practice among graphic designers — especially in the world of fashion and entertainment.  Here’s an agency that specializes in taking photos and doing some extraordinary retouching.  Click their portfolio link and the before/after submenu item to see what I’m talking about.  FluidEffect

I think that this should also serve as a reminder that not everything we see is what it really is.  Even the ones we perceive as being most beautiful have been retouched in one way or another to appear “more beautiful.”  It’s pretty sad when we can’t feel comfortable enough with our own wrinkles, flaws and blemishes.  Admittedly, I don’t think I’m comfortable enough either.

Compelling use of Flash: Iraq War Coalition Fatalities

So this morning I used the cool plugin StumbleUpon (for Firefox) and landed on this Flash-based Iraq War Coalition Fatalities website.  It somehow makes the reality of all the men and women who lost their lives just a little bit more real for those of us thousands of miles away.

Performancing for Firefox

Just testing out a cool Firefox extension that allows you to submit blog entries right within your browser (with the click of a button) and without having to browse to your blog, log in and then type.

You’ve gotta check it out.  Download the extension:  Performancing

Another cool thing…you can also go back and edit your recent posts as well (as I’m doing now).

Other cool Firefox extensions that I use include:

  • Forecastfox (customizeable weather in your status bar)
  • IE Tab (goodbye IE…now I can have you in Firefox.  Yes!  Systematically eliminating the need for the other browser.)
  • StumbleUpon (if I need something to kill time with.  Browse random sites based upon your interest selections)
  • Tab Mix Plus (enhanced tabbing control, including crash recover — you know it happens, so no need to remember what sites you had open)
  • Web Developer (great for well, uh, web developers.  Handy source viewers, validators and other cool tools.)
  • FireFTP (an FTP client right within your browser…one less application I’ll need to use)
  • Wizz RSS News Reader (a great supplement to RSS bookmarks)
  • Google Browser Sync (fabulous tool for having the same browser environment at work, home, and to go on your laptop).
  • FoxyTunes (Listen to music within the browser and controls such media players like WinAmp, iTunes, etc.)
  • BibleToolbar (a cool toolbar a good friend developed, which searches BibleGateway’s API)

Anyway, check ‘em out.  If there are any other cool firefox tools you use, post ‘em here.  I’d love to try ‘em out.

Bad corporation, bad!

As Americans we have become a consumer society — usually putting our appetites before our conscience; both the appettite of our stomach and that of our thirst for other tangible goods and services.

Think you know where your dollars are really going? I know it’s difficult to be aware of the effects of our purchases, but badcorp.com makes it a little easier. You can search by products or see their current (pardon my french) shitlist. Among that list includes McDonald’s, GAP, Nike and of course GE.

Like anything, I know you can take a perspective to extremes — but at least you can be informed and perhaps make your purchases from both your stomach and your conscience.
