San Antonio: Pt 2

Well, we finally got underway albeit 45 minutes late. After arriving, I checked in with Hertz — they drove me right to my rental car, which was pretty cool, and gave me directions to get to the hotel. They were quite helpful.

Finding the hotel wasn’t that difficult with the aid of Google Maps. I was able to use the hybrid map to get a better idea of what exit I needed to take and how I’d best reach the hotel. Speaking of hotel, the web access is pretty expensive — $9.95 per day. Odd, I thought that hi-speed internet was an included ammenity. I guess not.

To borrow a phrase from Stephen Colbert of The Colbert ReportMarriott Hotels & Resorts — I give a big wag of the finger for charging an arm and a leg for hi-speed internet access. Shame on you.

;)

Well, I’m going to go grab a gin and tonic and finish my work for the night. Gotta love those G&T’s. :P

San Antonio: Pt 1

Well, I love wi-fi — gives ya something to do when the flight is delayed. I was supposed to fly out at 2:10, but the flight got pushed back to 2:45. Let’s not hope for any further delays.

I was surprised as to how fast I got through security with a carry-on full of electronic gadgets, including the video camera, supportive lighting, cables, etc. But it was no fun lugging all my belongings onto little push baskets to send through the surveillance equipment — taking the laptop out of the bag, shoes off, etc.

Anyway, onto a little surfing to kill some time until my flight leaves in an hour or so.

Malcontent

As I was describing the difference between Folger’s and more premium coffees, a lady at work came up to me — she doesn’t work in our department, but near it — and she said, “you’re just a bit of a malcontent, aren’t you!?”

At first I was shocked that she had the lack of tact to say such a thing to someone and I was equally ticked that she just saw me as a malcontent — gotta have the right coffee, listen to the right music, have things done the right way on for the web, etc. So to my defense I simply retorted that I’m pretty well-educated in some areas and I know exactly what I like and what I don’t. Enough said.

Well, that just bothered me throughout the evening and into the night — am I really that bad, that someone would come right out and say I’m a malcontent?

If I look at the Merriam-Webster definition…

a discontented person: a : one who bears a grudge from a sense of grievance or thwarted ambition b : one who is in active opposition to an established order or government

I guess I could see myself fitting into all of those categories… I’m discontent in some areas of my life, I’ve got a bit of a grudge from some twarted ambitions, and well, the last one… I do hate beauracracy and the governmental system in general.

So maybe I am a malcontent. Now what?

A little globe trekkin’

I have the privilege of doing a little business-related travel, doing video/photo shoots for the ‘MO at call/claim centers in San Antonio, TX and International Falls, MN. I was kinda concerned about the flight to I-Falls when I initially saw that I was flying in a “turboprop.” But with further investigation of the Saab 340 Turboprop, I don’t feel so bad anymore.

I’ll also be flying on an Airbus a319 and a320 direct on the San Antonio flight.

Since I will have free high speed web access I’ll probably post a blog entry or two of my adventures in SA and IF.

Frequently Played Games

Well, following in line with my buddy’s blogging about games he’s been playing lately, I thought I’d give a quick run-down on the ones that I’ve been playing and the few that I’m giving a trial run of.

Exim & Authentication

I’ve been on this quest to find more robust SMTP authentication for Exim, the email processing application that we’re using on our server. I’ve been reading through Exim’s WIKI and found two pages that have information on verification and also about authentication options, but I don’t know about you — it just doesn’t seem so clear as to how to carry these options out.

So I put a ping out to any experienced Exim users: has anyone integrated any authentication methods that were simple to set up and configure? Not having ever worked with Exim before, I don’t know a whole lot about configuring it or adding components to it.

Image Thieves

Well, I had to just put my foot down on the incredible amount of image thievery from my server, specifically my mountain dew photo I took while working at Caribou and all the Runescape screenshots I took when I used to play that game. I’m shocked (yet simultaneously not surprised… if that’s even possible) at the vast number of people (especially at myspace.com) that stole my mountain dew photo, used my Runescape images, and even used my Chuck Taylor (”chucks”) photo for their own usage… linked directly off my server. That means that I get to be footin’ the bandwidth bill while they use my photos free of charge.

No thanks.

So if you really wanna use my mountain dew image, go ahead. I’m sure you won’t mind the lovely disclaimer that I’ve replaced it with. That is, if you don’t mind people seeing on your website that you’re a lazy, image-stealing bastard.

If you wanna use an image of mine, don’t be a thieving bastard and take without asking. Do us all a favor and ask and maybe I’ll letcha use it, provided that YOU host the image. I’m not going to pay for your thievery.
