Image Mouseover Javascript: Stripped Down

Javascript mouseover function has been around for at least eight years now, from somewhere around 1996/7 on. I see a lot of sites (including some of my own) that use Javascript for mouseover functions and decided to try and strip out as much code as I could to try and reduce the redundancy and unnecessary code used to perform such a simple procedure… swapping out an image for another one. Dreamweaver (as an example) is notorious for producing more code than you need.

Greetings from Superior Shores

lappy at superior shoresGreetings from the brisk getaway Superior Shores. It’s pretty cold and the wind is barreling through with no regard to anything that stands in its way. We almost weren’t sure if we were going to make it up here — my wife was quite ill last night, fighting off some sort of flu bug or something.

For how quiet it is up here, I am surprised we ended up with the forest view instead of a lake view suite. But that’s okay — I know what Lake Superior looks like. Plus, the free WI-FI access is a definite plus. If any hotel wants to remain respectable, free WI-FI should be a standard commodity for their guests.

Natalie’s got a great, little turkey brining in salt water and the pie smells great. Can’t wait to dig in tomorrow. For now we’re just going to take it easy.

The Big Bang vs. Intellegent Design

On my way home from my class I heard a re-broadcast of Midmorning on KNOW from Monday, the 14th. They had guest Simon Singh, author of “Big Bang: The Origins of the Universe” answering calls and emails from those listening to the program. It was only mildly interesting to listen to because Singh already has his mind made up — the Big Bang, while theory, is the only worthy theory of teaching when it comes to the origin of life.

Venturing Into New Territory

Well, I’m venturing into new design/development territory at work — DVD designing/development. Literally in the past two days I’ve received two new project requests, both for DVDs. One will be a virtual tour and visual FAQ for call/claim centers in San Antonio (TX) and up in da International Falls (MN). I am fortunate enough to get to fly/drive to both the locations and film the interviews and take photos of the centers.

The other project will be taking a 2-hour videod presentation and splicing it down into a tolerable 15-minute video for company-wide consumption (10,000+ employees).

And of course I have another multimedia project which will involve creating a demo of sorts of a new software app that the ‘MO will be using in one way or another. All of this to work on with an early January deadline. I’m the only multimedia guy in our building (I’m pretty sure about that one) and needless to say, I’ll be pretty busy. N0 vacations for me in December.

So I get the fortune of dusting off my Adobe Premiere skills (which I’ve really only used on a few occassions) and learning some new ones, like Adobe Encore DVD, which is a REEEEAALLY cool DVD creator that syncs right in with Photoshop. It’s pretty sweet.

I’ve already made my first dry-run DVD to get used to the interface of Encore and messing around with some things in Premiere Pro 1.5. They’re both really great apps and it’ll be fun working with them. Now I just have to find a place where I can rent a 3-CCD video camera and some supplemental lighting/audio for the interviews to get the best lighting and audio possible.

These projects will be a great challenge and will be great for the portfolio — plus it’ll really stretch me and cause me to learn some new things.

Lappy

Well, my lappy is on its way back, trying to find its way to my office of course. HP managed to leave out my ADDRESS, presuming that FedEx has that new ESP.ASAP capability to figure out where exactly in Golden Valley I am located.

Apparently the fan was defective (no, really?) and was replaced. We’ll see how long it lasts. If the problem returns I may look into trading up. Anyway, I hope to have good ol’ lappy back later today or early tomorrow. Yay!

The Weekend in Review

Well, the weekend started off pretty great with a show at The Riverview Cafe in South Minneapolis. For not having performed since earlier this summer things went pretty well. I did manage to really blow a Norah Jones tune, but despite that the other material went really well.

Feelin’ kinda … flat

Last night I had the joys of changing my tire — it apparently went flat while I was at work. As if it wasn’t bad enough changing my tire in the dark, balmy evening, the spare tire broke on me. Apparently a quart of oil was stashed next to the spare tire and leaked all over it. So it almost goes without saying that when the rubber met the road, the rubber didn’t stay where it was supposed to… ON THE RIM.

I didn’t get very far.

So I get to drop some coinage into some new tires — I’ve been needing new tires, and I guess circumstances sorta forced me to get them done now and no later.

And the towing company… they were a joke (save for the guy who actually decided to come and get me). The guy who WAS supposed to pick me up decided he was going to leave work early and told the other driver, “yeah, go get this guy’s car for me. I’m leaving work early. I think he’s got a ride, so just go get his car and bring it to the Tires Plus at ___.”

Fortunately the second driver stopped by to check on the car and saw that I was there WITH IT… so instead of getting picked up at 7:00… I was picked up at 7:45. I coulda totally gotten the tires fixed LAST NIGHT, but not so much thanks to the lazy driver at Feist Automotive Group in Golden Valley. Unfortunately they don’t have a website that I can GoogleBomb… so just be aware that if you need a tow, they might not be able to pick you up when they say they’re going to.

Back to the Manufacturer You Go

Well, my HP Pavilion dv1311se is still at it. Even after acting on the suggestions of the previous tech support chat session, my lappy overheated again this morning — and after only 2 hours of operation. I even had it propped up like they suggested. ‘Course, it doesn’t help matters at all when the processor fan isn’t running, right?

So as we speak, the technician is arranging for FedEx to come out and pick up my laptop for service — time to burn all my projects to CD cuz I’ll be without good ol’ lappy for about a week and a half to two weeks. ARGH!!!!

I’m curious to see if any other dv1311se owners (or even dv1000 series owners) are having overheating troubles like I am.
